Vicks Mk4 Golf

The Chassis Chop

Mk4 Golf's and Bora’s look great lowered, How ever you can only go so low on these cars before you hit problems. On a lowered mk4 Golf or Bora, the drivers side driveshaft fouls on the anti roll bar once these cars are lowered more than 40mm.

This problem is overcome by one of two ways, you can either fit a modified aftermarket anti-roll bar or longer drop links to help the anti-roll bar clear the driveshaft. On Vicks car I fitted both to give extra clearance. This wasn’t enough for Vick he still wanted to go lower. Once the car was lowered some more I hit on another problem. The driveshaft then rubbed on the chassis rail. This is not good as it can cause the driveshaft to fail when the car hits a bump. So I did what the old school custom cars boys do to get extra clearance, I notched the chassis rail. This involved removing a section of the chassis rail and welding in a strip to put the strength back into it. As you can see in the pictures below this gave the driveshaft loads more clearance. Once the welding was complete, the chassis rail was re-cavity waxed and tidied up to give a “factory” appearance. This enabled Vicks to literally sit on the floor!!!!!
