Chloe's 1974 Bug - Charlie
The owner of this Bug had been told it was fit for scrap. She had owned the car for seven years and it had been her only ever car. From the start I knew it was going to be a big project in terms of welding, but I had no idea quite how big the final project would be.
I attacked any area where I could see bubbles in the paintwork and eventually ended up repairing both heater channels, replacing the bottom half of both rear quarters, the bottom half of both front inner wings, various sections of the rear inner wings, the front panel, the bonnet and the wings. But the worst was yet to come: after exploring a rust bubble next to the rear window, a huge hole appeared. A repair section isn’t available for this area, so I had to use a suitable section cut from a donor car. As the project became more involved, it changed from a welding job to a full-on restoration.
Once the welding was complete, the owner took the car away for a respray. I got back a fully painted body shell, which I set about fitting up. The owner had boxes and boxes of brand new parts delivered to my workshop and I reassembled what was essentially a huge jigsaw. Overall, I ended up fitting a new interior, including a headlining, a full set of windows, all of the outer body panels and lots of shiny chrome bits like the roof rack, handbrake, bumpers, steering wheel, etc.
The car looked awesome when finished, and the owner was really pleased. This has been my favourite car to work on so far.
